Cyber-Bullying Web Quest Grade 8 Healthy Living Mr. MacPhee
This web-based lesson will explore the ideas of cyber-bullying for teens today. The activities will help develop an understanding of what cyber-bullying is, how and when it occurs, who participates in it, the effects it can have on people, and what can be done to stop it.
Part A: The Basics
Go to the website www.stopcyberbullying.org and allow the flash presentation at the beginning to play through. After the flash animation has finished playing, work through the following exercises:
1. Open a Powerpoint slide show and make a Title Slide called “Cyber-bullying Web Quest”. Add your name and that of your partner to the page as well just under the title. SAVE THE PAGE IN YOUR DRIVE!
2. Follow the “What is it?” web page link and read the section together. Create 4 Slides on your presentation. They should be:
· Cyber-Bullying: What it is
· Cyber-Bullying: What it isn’t
· Cyber-Bullying and the Law
· What Can Schools Do?
On each slide, you and your partner must compose a point form explanation or information bulletin. Complete sentences are not required for your ideas if you use bullets. USE YOUR OWN WORDS TO SUMMARIZE. Do not cut and paste. I have read the web page and I will know if you do! Cheating is bad Karma!
3. Use Google Images and Clip Art to choose a picture for each page that represents what the slide is explaining. NO RANDOM IMAGES!
4. Return to the www.stopcyberbullying.org main page and follow the link called “How It Works”. Create a new slide in your presentation for this idea that explains the two types of Cyber-Bullying (one sentence only for each type, just a very quick introduction).
5. Now add a slide for each type of cyber-bullying. On the slide for “Direct Attacks” make a bulleted list of each type of direct attack that may occur.
6. On the slide for “Cyber-bullying by Proxy” give a brief explanation in your own words of how someone can use others to accomplish their cyber-bullying.
7. Return to the www.stopcyberbullying.org main page and follow the link called “Why Cyber-bully?” Read this section together and discuss the ideas. Now open the program “Inspiration”. Use the program to create an idea web with all the reasons that kids may cyber-bully. The center bubble should be entitled “Reasons For Cyber-bullying”. Print off this web and hand it in to the teacher with both of your names on it.
Part B: Real Life Horror Stories
8. Open the web link http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/1230/p11s01-legn.html Read the first page together with your partner.
9. Open a Word document and entitle it “Ghyslain’s Story: A Canadian Teenager”. Write a brief summary of what happened to this boy, and how it affected his life. Limit 5-10 sentences.
10. Read the second page of this website with your partner. Locate the information on J. Guidetti, principal of Calabasas High School in California. Make a subtitle on your page called “Schoolscandals”. Under this heading give a point form explanation of what the problem was, who was creating the problem, and how the town helped to solve it.
10 b) Find a news article that is recent that showcases cyberbullying in some way. A good resource would be the Chronicle Herald. Add a section to your word document that gives me the link to this article, and a quick 4-point summary of the article. "Who What Where When"
Part C: Sum it all up
11. Open the web link http://kamaron.org/Cyber-Bullying Skip to the section entitled “Cyber-Bullying Victims and Perpetrators”. There are 4 big statistics in this section. (You can tell because they use % to tell you things.) Add a final slide to your PowerPoint Presentation called “Statistics”. Cut and paste these 4 stats to your final slide.
12. Scroll back up the page and follow the link “Cyber-Bully Internet Bully Solutions”. Watch the video “Cyber-Bullying Survival Guide”. Open a new Word Document and place a title at the top called “Video Review: Cyber-Bullying Survival Guide”. Copy and paste the following questions to the document, and fill in FULL SENTENCE answers for each one, then print the document and hand it in to the teacher with both of your names on it.
1. The lady in the video, Margaret Ross, has a great definition for Cyber-Bullying. What is her definition?
2. What are her 4 “Bully Buster Priorities’? (Hint: 2 don’ts and 2 do’s)
3. What are her top 5 Cyber-Bully blocking tips for parents?
